Playing drums since he was a teenager, Risty Bryce knew at a young age that music was the only thing that would give him freedom from reality and the “spark” that would forever change his life. He was playing in local bands, writing songs, recording music, playing shows, and loving every minute of it. But just when things seemed to be perfect, a paralyzing issue was about to change his life. That issue was a disease similar to MS. As the disease began to steal the use of his legs from him, he eventually decided to back off from playing and focus on his diagnosis.
Over the next 10 years he would be more consumed with doctors and the hope of a way to reverse the diagnosis resulting in him almost completely abandoning drumming altogether. Not being able to play his drums with the use of his legs killed his spirit, and in turn, made him feel inadequate at drumming. What once was as easy as breathing was now the hardest thing for him to do. Just as he was about to call it quits on playing drums, a few changes brought him to ask the question, “Why can’t I find a way to play the bass drum without the use of my legs?”
